Police Remind You to Click It or Ticket

From May 13-30 it has been designated as Illinois Click It or Ticket Mobilization.

The next time you get behind the wheel, make sure to buckle up.

Starting last week, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety with more than 500 local, county and state law enforcement agencies kicked off an aggressive national Click It or Ticket safety belt enforcement campaign.

“Safety belts are the single most important safety device in your vehicle and they have saved countless lives and prevented untold numbers of injuries over the years,” said Patrick McNulty, MCDH Public Health Administrator in a statement.  “We urge everyone driving on our state’s roads this summer to drive carefully, don’t drive impaired and, most importantly, buckle up each and every trip, day and night.”

  • 33,808 people were killed on America’s roadways in 2009.
  • Safety belts, when used by passenger vehicle occupants 5 and older, saved an estimated 12,713 lives in 2009 – more than 72,000 lives from 2005 through 2009 – and 267,890 lives from 1975 through 2009. 
  • Worn correctly, safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for front-seat passenger car occupants – and by 60 percent for pickup truck, SUV and van occupants. 
  • Motorists are 75 percent less likely to be killed in rollover crashes if they are buckled up.
