Lake in the Hills Ice Fishing Derby Canceled

Poor ice conditions force the Lake in the Hills Sportsmans Club to cancel the derby, which had been scheduled for this Saturday.

For those who look forward to events scheduled on area lakes over the winter, Mother Nature has not been kind this season.

The Lake in the Hills Sportsman's Club announced Wednesday that it would cancel its 27th annual Fishing Derby and Kids Fishing Derby due to poor ice conditions. The fishing derby had been scheduled this Saturday on Woods Creek Lake.

The Doc Haznow Chili Open Golf Classic held on Crystal Lake and the Lake in the Hills 4-on-4 Pond Hockey Tournament held on Woods Creek Lake also have been canceled in recent weeks.

Lake in the Hills Sportsman’s Club President Wane Guziak said his club made its decision to cancel this weekend's derby after checking the ice Wednesday.

"The ice was not good. There was only 4 inches of ice with 2 inches of slush on top of that," he said.

Raffle prizes include a chartered boat trip for six on Lake Michigan, a TV, fishing poles, tackle boxes, various gift cards and more, Guziak said.

"We definitely have more prizes than last year," he said.

The fishing derby and raffle is one of its main fundraising events for the Lake in the Hills Sportsman’s Club

Warm Winter Forces Other Cancelations

Another popular area event slated to be held Saturday, the Doc Haznow Chili Open Golf Classic, was canceled this past week by Crystal Lake park officials "because of poor ice conditions" on Crystal Lake, according to the Northwest Herald.

The village of Lake in the Hills also was forced  Hockey Tournament, which had been scheduled Feb. 4, because unseasonably high temperatures this winter did not lend itself to favorable ice conditions for the tournament.

Trevor Bosack, recreation supervisor for the village of Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department, said 8 inches of ice is needed to safely hold the pond hockey tournament on the lake. In 2011, a solid 12 inches of ice provided a safe surface for the tournament.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority,” Bosack told Lake in the Hills Patch in an interview last month.
