LITH Distributes Sandbags Amid Hopes Water Levels Stabilize

Public works crews filled about 3,000 sandbags Thursday and responded to residents' calls for assistance.

When pond, creek and lake water levels began rising Thursday, Lake in the Hills Public Works crews got busy filling sandbags and inspecting facilities throughout the village.

Crews started filling sandbags early in the morning, and eventually placed about 3,000 bags throughout Lake in the Hills, village officials said.

Bags were placed near the house at Jessie Road and Hiawatha Drive, and along Menominee Drive where it intersects with the creek, the first areas typically affected by rising water, village officials said.

Ken Carpenter Park, located at the corner of Miler and Randall roads, was under water and closed early in the day. The remaining LITH parks had large puddles, but nothing severe.

LITH's dams were inspected on the hour. Water flowing through Dam 2 on Goose Lake stablized by late Thursday afternoon, and Dam 1 on Woods Creek Lake rose about one inch per hour, according to LITH information.

With a break in the rain, Woods Creek's level was expected to stablize.

The village was operating late Thursday at an "Emergency Level 1," which is the preparatory stage for flood response.

As the rate of rainfall began to slow late Thursday, the National Weather Service showed a possibility of another half inch over the next 12 hours, according to village officials.
