LITH Airport Expansion Plans Move Forward

Trustees vote unanimously Thursday night for a public hearing on the plans.

Planning and Zoning Commission members will discuss the Lake in the Hills Airport expansion at a public hearing April 18.

Trustees unanimously Thursday night voted to give the plan to commission members to get their feedback and also collect comments from the public, said Shannon Andrews, assistant village administrator for the village of Lake in the Hills.

The existing airport is 72 acres and the village is considering the rezoning of five adjacent parcels – totaling about 65 acres – for airport use.

Village officials have said more space is needed at the airport. Work has already begun moving the taxiway farther from the runway, as a safety measure, but the relocation will eliminate space to park aircrafts.

The village has spent about $14.3 million at the airport in the past decade, but nearly 98 percent of that funding came from Federal Aviation Administration grants, said Fred Mullard, director of Public Works, whose duties also include running the airport.
