It’s Almost Tax Time!

The Internal Revenue Service pushed back Tax Day to April 18 from its normal day of April 15 because of Emancipation Day.

Thanks to a little known holiday called Emancipation Day, the deadline for filing individual state and federal taxes has been extended to Monday, April 18 from its normal April 15 deadline.

The holiday commemorates President Lincoln's freeing 3,100 slaves in D.C. in 1862. Emancipation Day is usually celebrated on April 16, but because it falls on a Saturday, its observance has been moved up to Friday the 15.

On Monday, Post Offices in Algonquin will close at their regularly scheduled time of 6:30 p.m. Any mail collected after 6:30 p.m. will be postmarked April 19 and will be considered late.

For everyone who hasn’t had an opportunity to complete their taxes, Phil Maksymonko, a local attorney who provides tax preparation services, offered these last minute tips:

  • Try to get all of your deductions – including charitable, real estate, and interest. Keep track during the year of your charitable donations and get receipts for cash. If you’ve donated items, the IRS website has a section where you can look up the approximate value of what you’ve donated. Most people undervalue the things they give away.
  • If you have children in college, pay attention to various tuition credits. There are up to four that you may be eligible for.
  • Make sure you have the correct social security numbers of all family members on the return.
  • Failing to sign the return is the No. 1 reason that returns are rejected. Double-check to make sure you’ve signed.

Maksymonko has available appointments up until the last minute for tax preparation. He charges $60 for state and federal taxes and can be reached at 847-658-7711.
