Illinois is considering selling ads on license plates to corporate sponsors as a way to deal with the state deficit, according to the Chicago Tribune. Gov. Pat Quinn approved a study, Thursday, that will analyze the costs and benefits of corporate sponsors on license plates
Companies would pay to put their ads on the plates; the enticement for motorists would be a discount on the cost of the plates.
The only other state that currently allows corporate advertising on its license plates in Texas, according to The State Journal-Register. The Texas state government contracted with a third-party vendor, My Plates, to produce specialty license plates. A My Plates spokesperson told The State Journal-Register that the sale raised $51,805 for the state’s general revenue fund, so far.
