Huntington Drive Closed This Week

Closure expected to increase traffic on Algonquin Road and Route 31.

If you take Huntington Drive to get around Algonquin Road and Route 31 construction, be prepared to take a different route this week.

Huntington Drive will be closed starting this week as the Western Bypass project work starts in the area. Huntington will be closed until summer 2014, officials said.

Lane closures will also occur on Main Street (Illinois Route 31) beginning in April on South Main Street between Edgewood Drive and Huntington Drive and North Main Street between Cary-Algonquin Road and Linden Avenue.

Construction on the Western Bypass began last fall and should be completed in 2014. The final project includes the construction of 2.11 miles of a four-lane divided highway, diamond interchange, four new bridges, retaining walls and noise abatement walls west of downtown Algonquin. Route 31 will also be relocated and realigned, IDOT’s website stated.

Police will have to do added patrols to control speeding through the subdivisions, which happened when other roads in the area were closed, Mayor John Schmitt said.
