Flea Market Likely To Get Nod From LITH Trustees

One objector during Tuesday's meeting told trustees the market "would be an eyesore."

A proposed flea market on vacant land on the west side of Illinois Route 31 about a half-mile south of Rakow Road was met with some opposition from neighbors, but is expected to be approved Thursday night by the Lake in the Hills Village Board.

Tony Sarillo, owner of Crystal Lake-based Sarillo Development, would run the flea market on 5 acres of land owned by developer Ray Plote.

Sarillo told trustees at a Tuesday night Committee of the Whole meeting that the business would be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends April through October.

Dan Olson, director of community development for the village, advised trustees to grant Sarillo a conditional-use permit. After two years, Sarillo would be required to appear before trustees to renew the permit and address any issues.

According to the plan, there would be no permanent structures. The area would be covered by asphalt grindings and outhouses would be available for patrons.

“It’s going to be an eyesore and a bad move for the village,” said Emmett Stains, owner of a self-storage business neighboring the property and the sole objector to address trustees Tuesday night.

Members of the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission OK'd a conditional use request for the weekend flea market in a 5-2 vote on April 18.

The flea market proposal will be voted on by the village board during Thursday's meeting.
