'Festival of the Sugar Maples' Continues This Weekend

Annual festival presented by the McHenry County Conservation District is scheduled for the first two weekends in March at Coral Woods Conservation Area. in Marengo.


The sweetest sign spring is approaching is the annual "Festival of the Sugar Maples" at Coral Woods Conservation Area in Marengo.

The festival is presented by the McHenry County Conservation District, and provides residents an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and learn how early McHenry County settlers used maple syrup in their daily lives.

The "Festival of the Sugar Maples" will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, March 2, 3, 9, and 10. Coral Woods Conservation Area is located at 7400 Somerset in Marengo (see attached map).

Guests will hike through the woods, and see various methods used to tap maple trees and collect their sap every spring. (Warmer temperatures and added daylight get the sap flowing).

Visitors will also see how maple syrup is made at the evaporator house at Coral Woods. Attendees can also sample the syrup, and buy some to take home with them, while supplies last.

Maple Sugar Festival Highlights:

  • Event is free! (no pets, though).
  • Visitors can arrive at their leisure.
  • Guided walking tours leave every 15 minutes. Tours involve a half-mile hike over uneven terrain. Dress for the weather conditions. 
  • Last tour of every day departs at 3 p.m.

Stop by before or after your walking tour at The Lion's Club annual Pancake Breakfast. $3 per child/$6 per adult. Breakfasts are held on Sundays at the following locations: 

  • March 3, 7 a.m.–1 p.m.: Marengo United Methodist Church, 119 E. Washington, Marengo.
  • March 10, 7 a.m.–Noon: Donley's, 8512 South Union Rd., Union. (banquet facility side, bar will be open)

Free shuttle service will be available between the pancake breakfast locations and the Festival of the Sugar Maples between 10 a.m.–3 p.m. each Sunday.
