District 300 to Lobby in Springfield Against Sears Extension

Lawmakers could vote on the bill that would extend the tax breaks as early as Tuesday, Oct. 25.

District 300 is organizing a caravan to Springfield on Monday, Oct. 24 to lobby against the extension of the Sears tax incentives, according to a press release from the district.

Supporters of the district will voice their opposition to Amendment 3 of Senate Bill 540, which would extend the Sears property tax breaks for an additional 15 years. The bill could be voted on as early as Oct. 25.

When the resolution was adopted in 1989 as a way to keep Sears in Illinois, leaders set the property tax incentives to last 23 years. With the agreement set to expire in mid-2012, the district says it will lose out on more than $200 million if the tax relief is extended. Meanwhile Sears and Hoffman Estates say the area may lose 6,000 jobs if Sears were to lose the tax breaks and relocate.
