Crossroad Bridges Close as Part of I-90 Reconstruction

The local bridges are expected to close starting on Aug. 19.

Eight local crossroad bridges over the I-90 are scheduled to close beginning Aug. 19 as part of a $2.2 billion reconstruction project on the major thoroughfare, according to a press release from the Illinois Tollway.

Crossroad bridges along Mill Road in Winnebago County, Irene Road in Boone County, Stone Quarry Road in Boone County, Genoa Road in Boone County, Getty Road in McHenry County, Brier Hill Road in McHenry County, Sandwald Road in Kane County and Power Road in Kane County will be closed as part of the reconstruction project. Full closure of the local crossroad bridges is necessary because the roadways over I-90 are too narrow to accommodate traffic, according to the news release.

All of the bridges, which were originally built in the 1950s, will be lengthened to accommodate a new, wider I-90, according to the press release.

Here is more information on local bridge closures, their locations and detour routes:

  • In McHenry County, the Getty Road bridge will close. A detour will direct traffic to use Harmony Road, Hampshire Road, Melms Road and County Line Road in both directions to route around the Getty Road closure. About 150 vehicles use this stretch of local roadway daily.
  • Also in McHenry County, the Brier Hill Road bridge will be closed. A detour will direct traffic to use Harmony Road and U.S. Route 20 in both directions to route around the Brier Hill road closure. Around 650 vehicles use this stretch of local roadway daily.
  • In Kane County, the Sandalwood bridge will be closed. A detour will direct traffic to Jim Dhamer Road, Illinois Route 47 and Big Timber Road in both directions to route around the Sandalwood closure. About 450 vehicles use this stretch of local roadway daily.
  • Also in Kane County, the Power Road bridge will be closed. A detour will direct traffic to use Big Timber Road, Illinois Route 72, Higgins Road, Tyrell Road and Freeman Road in both directions to route around the Powers Road closure. About 600 vehicles use this stretch of local road daily.
The I-90 widening projects includes improvements to 62 miles of roadway. The Illinois Tollway is rebuilding the eastbound lanes between Rockford and Elgin and that work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

As many as 30 local crossroad bridges are expected to be reconstructed as part of this project.
