5 Ways to Recognize Troops, Veterans Day

McHenry County College Veterans Day Recognition Program

McHenry County College will be hosting a Veterans Day Recognition Program on Friday, Nov. 11. 

The program will start at 9 a.m. with the MCC Chorus and MCC Band performing followed by a ceremony at 9:30 a.m., according to a MCC press release.

Speakers at the event will include Vaughn Heidenreich of Woodstock, a World War II Air Force veteran, and Sharon Slover, director of Education and Careers with the Special Education District of McHenry County (SEDOM).

Operation Support Our Troops America Collects Donations Locally

Operation Support Our Troops America is kicking off its November Christmas drive and looking to raise money and collect donations to help provide comfort packages to military members overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan — "many of which receive no letters or packages," according to a OSOTA flyer. 

OSTOA will have a drop-off location at JA Frate, 7900 Pyott Road in Crystal Lake, and will be collecting donations on Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The organization is accepting donations of: foot powder (14 ounces or less), antacids, nasal spray, eye drops, cold medicines (no liquid medications), vitamins (100 count or less), anti-itch or antibiotic creams, pain relievers (for example, Tylenol —100 count or less), Q-tips (70 count or less), canned pasta or soup (28 ounces or less), socks, beef jerky or Slim Jims, crackers (16 ounces or less), granola bars, tuna, microwave popcorn and canned nuts (20 ounces or less). 

Other ways you can help is by providing a monetary donation to OSTOA or by writing a letter to a military member to be included in the comfort packages.

Celebrate the 236th Marine Corps Birthday at Legion

American Legion Post 1231 will be hosting a 236th U.S. Marine Corps birthday celebration Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at the post’s headquarters, 1101 W. Algonquin Road.

There will be a buffet and door prizes. The cost is $15 per person and proceeds will be donated to Toys for Tots. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a new toy to donate.

 

Legion Hosts 10th Annual Veteran’s Thank You Luncheon

The American Legion Post 1231 will also be hosting the 10th Annual Veteran’s “Thank You Luncheon” on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11:30 a.m.

Attendees will meet at the Lake in the Hills Police Department, 1109 Crystal Lake Road, for an escort to the American Legion Post 1231 hall, 1101 W. Algonquin Road.

You can show your encouragement and support for our veterans and current troops overseas by commenting below on this article. Let the military members in your life know you care or simply let the public know why you appreciate their service. 

You can also upload photos depicting your time, or a family members’ time, enlisted in military service or current photos of a loved one who is serving overseas.
