Greco, 66, of Crystal Falls, Michigan was charged with first degree murder, Inverness police said. Greco was involved in an extra-marital affair at the time of her husband's murder.

Her husband, Gaimari, was a commodities broker at the Chicago Board of Trade. Police said the couple had been married since 1963 and lived with their four children in a sprawling home in rural Inverness on Turkey Trail Road.

On April 30, 1979, two men entered the residence and stated they were robbing the home. Police said the two men ordered Greco and the couple's three children – ages 13, 5, and 2 – into a bedroom, tied them up and locked them in a closet.

Before they closed the closet door, the men took a box off of a top shelf that contained two handguns owned by Gaimari. Police said that later that afternoon, Gaimari returned home and the two men were waiting in the basement.

Gaimari's body was discovered by the couple's 13 year-old daughter. He had been shot multiple times in the torso. The two guns were found near Gaimari's body.

Police said that Greco pre-planned and staged the home invasion, and that Greco's boyfriend moved into the house. The new couple was married within four months. Greco later inherited Gaimari's estate valued at more than $500,000.

"A case may go cold for an extended period of time but we do not forget about our victims," said Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez. "This particular case was a cold-blooded, premeditated murder motivated by greed. Not only did this defendant have the nerve to arrange the murder of her husband, she apparently had no reservations about subjecting her young children to this horrific and terrifying experience."

Police stated that a witness in the case said Greco had told the witness she was "fed up" and wanted to "get rid" of Gaimari. Greco also allegedly told another witness she planned to kill Gaimari and was going to stage a home invasion.

Another witness said Greco made threatening remarks to her in 1996 telling the woman "stay out of my business or I'll have you killed like my husband."

Investigators obtained a warrant and recorded a conversation between Greco and a witness on Valentine's Day in which Greco admitted planning to kill Gaimari.

On March 27 a warrant was issued and Greco was arrested in Crystal Falls, Michigan. She was extradited to Cook County on Tuesday where she is being held without bond. Greco's next court date is May 29.

If convicted, Greco faces 40 years in prison.
