UPDATED: Weekend Standoff in Arlington Heights

News and citizen reports state a shooting occurred near downtown Arlington Heights after 5 p.m. Saturday, according to local residents, a village news alert and the Arlington Cardinal.

Police sources on the scene tell Brian Slupski, associate regional editor at Patch.com that the situation has been resolved.

Though there is no official confirmation, it appears to bystanders that an individual is in the custody of law enforcement, Labuda said.

A standoff between police and an individual is being confirmed by local police sources at the residences at 151 W. Wing Street. Police are advising residents to stay away from the building. 

Brian Slupski, Patch.com associate regional editor told Arlington Heights Patch that at least 20 S.W.A.T. team members wearing full body armor, carrying assault rifles, are on the scene. 

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team also is on the scene, per Lisa Labuda, regional advertising manager at Patch.com.

According to the NIPAS website, agencies utilize the Emergency Services Team for such situations, in addition to major crime scene searches, search and rescue missions, and other serious circumstances. 

Labuda said police are standing at the entrance and exits of the Jewel-Osco, directing people to hurry into the store or hurry back to get into their cars.

Arlington Heights residents Nino Cuttone and his wife Cindy were out for a walk in downtown Arlington Heights around 6 p.m. when they stumbled across the police barricade on N. Chestnut Street.

“We were told to move by police, and that there was possibly a gunman in range, but police weren’t sure what type of weapon it was,” Cindy Cuttone said. 

Franklin Park, Glenview and Berwyn police also are on the scene.

An emergency situation is being reported in downtown Arlington Heights, according to an emergency warning issued by the Village of Arlington Heights.

Residents living in the downtown area are being asked to stay off of their balconies until further notice.

Residents who reached out to Arlington Heights Patch report that SWAT teams have been called in, and the situation is occurring near the Jewel-Osco. 

Earlier, the Arlington Cardinal reported that at 5:21 p.m. Arlington Heights Police responded to shots fired, and a male subject with a gun near 1 N. Chestnut Avenue.

Residents are advised to avoid the entire downtown area for their safety, the most recent closures reported by the Arlington Cardinal are near Wing Street, Campbell Street, Ridge Avenue and west of Jewel-Osco
