More details surrounding the murder of an 11-year-old girl Tuesday morning were revealed during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, according to media reports.

An autopsy showed the 11-year-old girl, who police say was killed by a 14-year-old girl in a Mundelein home, suffered 40 knife wounds, including 30 stab wounds across the girl's neck, chest and arm; three slashes across her face; and defensive wounds on her hands, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Daily Herald reports the two girls were relatives and both lived together in the town house in the 1600 block of Woodhaven Court where the 11-year-old girl's body was discovered by police about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Some media reports have identified the girls as half-sisters.

The attack occurred following an argument and police believe a small kitchen knife was used as a weapon, according to the Daily Herald. The Chicago Tribune reports that police believe the attack occurred just before the 14-year-old called 911 around 8:25 a.m.

The 14-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree murder as a juvenile and was expected to appear in court Wednesday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune. Officials could still transfer the case to adult court and that decision could be made in coming weeks, according to the Daily Herald.

A story that I read on another site says that schools were placed on lockdown for approximately 15 minutes after the older sister claimed that an intruder had broken in and stabbed her sister...if school was in session, then why weren't these two in school?!

Where are the parents!?

Get off the parents. Maybe she/he/they were working to support their family and left their 14 y/o at home alone (which is legal) and to care for the 11 y/o. A little research shows their school day started at 8:30 so this transpired prior to the school day starting for all of the 'why weren't they in school' preachers. I don't know the logistics of how they were supposed to get to school along with many other details...and neither do you so back off.

I agree with laying off the mother - she was at work. The kids were 14 and 11, old enough to be home alone.

Always amazed at the intelligence of posters. Thank you, Tom and Jim, for writing what needed to be said. At 8:25 A.M., the mother (whom y'all have vilified without second thought) was probably at work. And at 8:25 A.M., the kids weren't in school because one was killed and the other most likely did it . . . or, at the very least . . . discovered her dead sibling. That's why they weren't in school. That's why the school was on lock down. I don't know, maybe I just watch too many cop shows and can figure this stuff out fairly easily. By all means, don't support this unknown mother in her time of need . . . make sure you make her part of the sad equation.

So, she raised to (sic) murderers? Was the victim also a murderer? Going out on a limb here . . . but do you think there may have been an undiagnosed mental illness in the 14 year-old? Pretty common, TPR (D). Though not that many snap to this extreme. Don't get me wrong, the kid needs to account for what she did. Blaming the victim's mother? C'mon.

There is something yummy about rising bread. I would have no trouble laying blame at the girl's mother's feet . . . if I actually knew them and their histories and their lives. Since I don't, I really don't know **** about them and sort of can't pass judgment. Really is much easier picking on a snot like Justin Bieber than the mother of an 11 year-old MURDER VICTIM.

The mother was at work. This poor woman has lost both her babies in the same day. She is a good mom trying to make life work. The girls were involved in sports and cheerleading and went to catholic school. Mental disease isn't something you can blame a parent for. They are born with it. If its inherited I'm willing to bet that's why the mother left the first husband. Bottom line, she's in an awful place and my heart truly breaks for her

There's lots of things no one knows about the 14 year old girl---if there was mental illness of some sort, most likely she is on meds, which bring with them a whole host of side effect issues, some of which could be violence...we know the recent stories in the news, yet why are we surprised. God knows what type of uncontrollable anger issues she may obviously have---or what craziness "triggered" her. But to put sole blame on mom---no. Not right. Pray for the family, and their losses. Have some compassion.

How about skip the first part and jump right over to the pray and compassion part. There ya go.
