Survey Ranks DUI Arrests in Area Communities

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists has released the results of its annual Illinois DUI Arrest Survey. How did Algonquin and Lake in the Hills stack up?

The results of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) annual DUI Arrest Survey show 84 DUI arrests were made in Algonquin in 2012 while 121 were made in Lake in the Hills.

This puts Algonquin at No. 84 and Lake in the Hills at No. 54 on the list of nearly 700 police agencies that provided results.

The results also show that the DUI arrest rate per officer in Algonquin was 1.57 arrests while Lake in the Hills police made 3.18 arrests per officer. There were 38 sworn officers in Lake in the Hills and 49 in Algonquin in 2012, according to the survey results.

"One reason AAIM continues to survey and report the number of impaired driving arrests throughout Illinois (is) because traffic safety advocates believe that drunk drivers who are arrested are the fortunate ones," said Marti Belluschi, AAIM board vice president and crash survivor. "In our impaired driving prevention programs, we always remind people that if they are driving drunk, they are lucky if it is a cop that stops them, rather than a tree, another car or a small child."

Rockford ranked No. 1 for DUI arrests with 686. In terms of counties, Cook County ranked first, with 430 arrests. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office made 157 DUI arrests in 2012.

"Departments that make more DUI arrests do not necessarily pinpoint more drunk drivers in Illinois communities," said Rita Kreslin, AAIM executive director. "It does indicate additional active enforcement in municipalities and counties, which aides in targeting DUI offenders."
