Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Elderly

Anyone who has been a victim of the scam is encouraged to call their police department or sheriff's office.

A phone scam targeting McHenry County's elderly community has the sheriff's office reminding the public not to provide personal or financial information over the phone to someone you do not know. 

Elderly residents are reporting the calls come from an unknown person who claims to be their grandson and will go on to state that they went on a trip with friends and had been arrested, according to McHenry County Sheriff's Department press release. 

The caller then asks to have money wired to them for their bail.

In the situation that you think you've been the victim of a phone scam, the sheriff's office provides the following tips:

  • Do not provide personal or financial information over the phone
  • Call a trusted family member or a familiar contact at your bank to investigate further
  • Caretakers and family members of seniors should discuss whom to contact if they think someone is trying to scam them
  • Contact your local police department or sheriff's office if you believe you are the victim of a scam. The Lake in the Hills Police Department's dispatch number is 847-658-5676 and she sheriff's office is 815-338-2144.
