Sheriff's Office Kicks Off Holiday Enforcement

The sheriff's office will be targeting impaired drivers and those driving without a seat belt.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a special traffic enforcement period starting today and running through Nov. 27.

The enforcement period will focus on making sure drivers are wearing their seat belts and not driving under the influence, according to a sheriff's department press release. 

Over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010, 700 were injured and 15 died in crashes accross the state—nine of those fatalities involved a drunken driver, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help in reporting impaired drivers to their local police department or the sheriff's office. 

The enforcement period was made possible through a Traffic Safety Grant awarded to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The sheriff's office will conduct nine campaigns over the next 12 months with the goal of reducing crashes and fatalities on the coutny's roadways, according to the news release.
