Reported Pipe Bomb in Algonquin Actually Geocaching Marker

A reported "pipe bomb" located by an Algonquin Public Works employee downtown Algonquin today turned out to be a geocashing marker, according to a village of Algonquin press release. 

The object was found about 10:40 a.m. in the area of 2 Main St. 

The Algonquin Police Department responded to the area and the Kane County Bomb Squad was also called to the scene. 

The bomb squad was able to identify the item as a Geocaching marker.  

In light of this incident, the village of Algonquin is reminding residents to register geocache markers with the village "to ensure that resources are not being wasted,"according to the news release.

"The item in question was not registered with the Village of Algonquin and thus created a safety concern and the use of numerous resources," according to the news release. 

Individuals who participate in geocaching and would like to register a cache can do so online at www.algonquin.org/recreation.
