Cary

Three Injured in Blaze at Industrial Building in Cary

Three workers were injured in an explosion and fire at Fox Valley Systems in Cary on Wednesday.

Nearby buildings had to be evacuated due to the paint and chemicals contained in the building, officials said. Two people injured in the explosion have been transferred to the burn unit at Loyola Hospital and the third victim was sent to the St. Anthony Hospital Burn Unit in Rockford, according to Cary Fire Lt. Andy Veath. 

Investigators from the Cary Fire Protection District, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Illinois State Fire Marshals are still investigating what caused the two explosions and the subsequent fire.

Crystal Lake

Student Arrested for Camera Found in Locker Room at Crystal Lake Central High School

Crystal Lake Police have made an arrest in the case of a pin-hole camera found Thursday in the boys' athletic locker room at Crystal Lake Central High School.

Luke P. Gildea, 17, of Crystal Lake, has been charged with two counts of unauthorized video recording. One count is a class 4 felony, and the second is a class 3 felony involving a victim under 18 years old, Crystal Lake Police Comander Dan Dziewior stated in a press release issued late Thursday night.

Gildea is a student at the school, which is located at 45 W. Franklin St. 

The camera device was found by another student in the locker room. The pin-hole camera is a stand-alone device, which does not possess the capability of main streaming video to a wireless system, according to police.

Des Plaines

Man Dies after Found Lying Next to Snow Blower in Des Plaines

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a report of an unconscious man lying down next to a snow blower on the 1000 block of Third Avenue at 3:20 p.m. on March 5. When firefighters arrived on the scene, Fire Chief Alan Wax stated in an email to Patch, they found the man in cardiac arrest.

“Resuscitation attempts were initiated and the patient was transported to Lutheran General Hospital, however, unfortunately, he did not survive,” Wax stated.

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a number of calls during the snowstorm on Tuesday.

Des Plaines

Off-Duty Evanston Cop Rescues Boy from Freezing Des Plaines River

The quick action of an off-duty Evanston police officer may be responsible for saving the life of a boy that fell or jumped into the Des Plaines River on Tuesday afternoon.

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a report of a child that ran across Miner Street and jumped into the Des Plaines River near the dam at Joseph Schwab Road at 3:38 p.m. on March 5. When they arrived on the scene, Des Plaines firefighters found a seven-year-old boy who had jumped or fallen in the river.

“An off-duty Evanston police officer saw the boy go in the river, and entered the water to retrieve the boy, saving his life,” Wax stated.

Both were out of the water when the Des Plaines Fire Department arrived, Wax stated, and the boy was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in good condition.

Barrington

Elgin Man Killed in Barrington Hills Crash

A 61-year-old Elgin man is dead after a car crash in Barrington Hills Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Ronald Ziolo was driving southbound on Route 59, south of Dundee Road when a Barrington Hills 18-year-old driving an SUV hit Ziolo’s car head on. Ziolo’s car was also hit from the rear when the crash happened. The Chicago Tribune reports the teen driver sideswiped another southbound car just before crashing into Ziolo’s vehicle.

Four other people were hospitalized as a result of the crash with non-life threatening injuries, the Daily Herald reports. No charges have been filed. An investigation into what happened is still ongoing. 

Northbrook

Highwood Man Killed in Northbrook Car Crash

A Highwood man was killed last Thursday in a multiple-vehicle car crash at the corner of Skokie Boulevard and Dundee Road in Northbrook, the Chicago Tribune reports. 

The Northbrook Fire Department responded to the four vehicle crash with one car on its side, according to deputy fire chief Tim Smeltzer. Hector Esquivel, a 23-year-old from the 200 block of Greenbay Road in Highwood, was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash at 3:40 p.m., according to the Tribune. 

According to Smeltzer, Esquivel was not in the car on its side.

Glenview

Found Women Died of Natural Causes

, decomposing in their unincorporated Cook County home near Glenview. Medical examiners determined Hochner died from a heart attack and Schultz suffered head trauma from a fall, though ongoing cardiovascular disease and alcoholism may have contributed to Schultz's death, according to CBS Chicago.

The Cook County Sheriff's Department does not suspect foul play in either death, CBS Chicagoreports. The women's family was told they probably died in late January, although an exact time could not be determined, according to the Chicago Tribune.
