Police Respond to Two Synthetic Marijuana Overdose Cases

The overdoses both occurred over the Fourth of July weekend.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, the Mchenry County Sheriff's Office responded to two overdose investigations caused by synthetic marijuana use, according to a sheriff's office press release.

"Both individuals survived due to the immediate response of emergency personnel and quick actions by responding deputies to identify the type of drug (synthetic marijuana) which caused the overdose," according to the news release.

No details on where the overdose cases were reported or the age of the individuals involved was immediately available.

The sheriff's office is reminding the public about the dangers associated with the use of synthetic marijuana, commonly known as "K2" or "Spice," according to the news release. Synthetic marijuana became illegal in Illinois in January 2011.

Those who use synthetic marijuana may experience severe hallucinations, psychotic episodes, seizures and irregular heartbeat, according to the news release.

Synthetic marijuana is a mixture of herbal leaves in various colors. The leaves are treated with chemicals that mimic the effects of marijuana. Synthetic marijuana is commonly sold in square foil packs or plastic zip seal bags.

The sheriff's office encourages any information regarding the possession or sale of synthetic marijuana to be directed to the McHenry County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762-STOP (7867) or to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office tip line e-mail at tip line@co.mchenry.il.us. Callers can remain anonymous.
