Police: Lake in the Hills Man Arrested in Van Fire

Luis A. Ruiz faces arson and criminal damage to property charges.

A 27-year-old Lake in the Hills man faces charges after police said he intentionally set a van on fire in Crystal Lake early Tuesday. 

Luis A. Ruiz, of 1507 Washington St., Lake in the Hills, is accused of setting fire to a Chevrolet van on Butternut Drive in Crystal Lake. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office was called to the vehicle blaze at 4:57 a.m. April 3.

Police said they learned of Ruiz's involvement through witness statements and evidence found at the scene, according to a sheriff's office press release.

Ruiz turned himself in Tuesday evening and was taken into custody at the McHenry County Correctional Facility. 

He was charged with felony arson and misdemeanor criminal damage to property. The blaze remains under investigation, and more charges could be filed, according to the news release.

A $40,000 bond was set for Ruiz, and he is next expected in court at 9 a.m. April 24.
