Pilot Suffers Heart Attack, Lands Plane in Field

Steven R. Nusbaum of Hebron is listed in critical but stable condition at an area hospital.

A 65-year-old pilot is in critical but stable condition after suffering a heart attack and having to make an emergency landing of his plane in a farm field in rural McHenry County.

The Hebron man, Steven R. Nusbaum, had been flying an experimental aircraft about 5:33 p.m. Tuesday when he was forced to land along the 7000 block of Miller Road in Hebron, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Department press release. 

His son, Chance A. Nusbaum, was monitoring his flight and saw the plane land in the field. He found his father lying back in the seat of his plane.

Emergency personnel called to the scene administered CPR and used an AED on Nusbaum before transporting him to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition, according to the news release. 

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified about the incident.
