No Injuries Reported in Weekend Fire

A local family was able to safely get out of their home following an early-morning fire at a residence they rented at 124 Lakewood Drive in Oakwood Hills, according to a Cary Fire Protection District press release.

The fire was reported at 12:19 a.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, firefighters found the backside of a two-story split-level home and a porch coming off the second story on fire with flames spreading to the attic, according to the news release.

Scott and Nancy Keifer and their 12-year-old son were home asleep when the blaze started, according to the news release. Scott told fire officials he smelled smoke and heard smoke alarms going off before finding flames coming from the kitchen area of the house.

The family was able to safely get out of the home and no injuries were reported in the blaze, according to the news release.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within 20 minutes. The fire is not considered suspicious and is under investigation.

There are no damage estimates but severe damage was reported to the attic and rear-second-story of the home. The rest of the home has smoke and water damage.

The family was making arrangements to stay with friends for the time-being, according to the news release.

Since the blaze was reported in an area that is not protected by fire hydrants, the Cary Protection District received automatic aid from Barrington-Countryside, Fox River Grove and Nunda Rural Fire Protection districts.
