Man Sentenced for Fourth Domestic Battery

A 24-year-old Carpentersville man will spend five years in prison for punching and severely injuring his girlfriend in June 2012, according to a Kane County State's Attorney press release.

Tyrell D. Sumling, most recently of the 2000 block of Berkshire Circle in Carpentersville, entered a guilty plea on Monday to one count of aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony, according to a news release. Sumling has been convicted of domestic battery on at least three previous occasions stemming from incidents in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Police were called to a home in East Dundee in June after Sumling and his longtime girlfriend began to argue. The dispute turned violent when Sumling punched the victim in the abdomen, causing her spleen rupture.

The victim’s spleen was removed as a result of the rupture, according to the news release. The victim remained hospitalized for a week as she recovered from her injuries and from the surgery.

According to Illinois law, Sumling must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for at least 448 days served in the Kane County jail, where he had been held since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail.
