Man Rescued from Fox River After Canoe Tips Over in Algonquin Dam

For the second time in a month, local rescuers were able to save someone Friday who became stuck in the dam on the Fox River in Algonquin.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was called to the Fox River at the Route 62 bridge in Algonquin at 7:18 a.m. Friday after fisherman called 911 to report a canoe and male victim in the dam.

Emergency personnel first on scene found the canoe tipped over and the male victim holding onto the canoe in the boil of the dam, according to an Algonquin-LITH Fire Protection District press release.

Firefighters quickly dropped ropes and a lifesaving buoy to the victim and pulled him safely to shore. The victim was on shore within 8 minutes of the fire departments arrival.

He was evaluated for injuries and released at the scene.

The incident comes a month after a Grayslake couple's boat stalled and nearly went over the Algonquin Dam on June 25.  Firefighters were able to drop ropes to the boat and secure it in place.

Rescuers on the Fire District Boat were able to then get Steve and Grace Leseth — and their dog — safely off the boat and drop them off at a nearby pier, according to the news release and media reports.
