LITH Police Up Enforcement for Memorial Day Weekend

Police officials remind residents not to drive while impaired.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department will increase enforcement efforts this upcoming Memorial Day weekend with the hopes of keeping area roads free of drunken drivers.

Police will intensify its enforcement efforts during the late-night hours of the Memorial Day weekend as part of its "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, according to the Lake in the Hills Police Department press release. The campaign is funded in part by a Illinois Department of Transportation STEP grant.

“We will be stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up,” said James Wales, Director of Police and Public Safety.

During a similar effort over St. Patrick's Day, the Lake in the Hills Police Department conducted 56 hours of additional traffic enforcement and pulled over 71 vehicles, Eric Decker, supervisor of the LITH Police Traffic Unit, said in a press release.

Of those pulled over, two were arrested for driving under the influence, 37 received citations for speeding, 9 were cited for occupant restraint violations and 10 were cited for failure to have mandatory insurance, Decker said.

LITH Police provided the following reminders to residents:

  • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys
  • If you are impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely
  • Promptly report impaired drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement
  • Wear your safety belt and make sure all passengers are buckled up. It is your best defense against an impaired driver
