Police departments throughout Illinois were participated Friday in the "Cop on Top" event, where officers perched themselves on the rooftops of local Dunkin' Donuts with plans to stay there until they reached their fund-raising goal. The fundraiser benefits Illinois Special Olympics.

For LITH police and members of the LITH Explorers Club, their goal Friday was to raise $1,600 from customers driving through and stopping by for their morning coffee or doughnut.

"I think we'll reach our goal easily today," said Chris Miller, a police officer for the LITH Police Department.

Last year, the department raised $1,500 during the event.

The officers took turns climbing to the Dunkin' Donuts' rooftop, harnessed themselves to the store's air conditioning unit for safety and waved at Randall Road commuters to attract donations.

Those making any size donation received a coupon for a free doughnut. In addition to allowing the officers to stand on their rooftops, Dunkin' Donuts Corp. gives $10,000 to the fundraiser, Miller said.

Police officers also sold hats and T-shirts, and chances to win a Harley-Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic motorcycle, donated by Chuck's Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, Illinois.
