LITH Police Arrest South Barrington Man for Possessing Synthetic Drug

Lake in the Hills Police arrested Elish D. Modi Tuesday afternoon.

Lake in the Hills police arrested a 35-year-old South Barrington man Tuesday afternoon for unlawful possession of a control substance. 

The arrest of Elesh D. Modi, 42 W. Mundhank Drive in South Barrington, on a charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance stemmed from a May investigation at Cigarettes Depot, 162 N. Randall Road in Lake in the Hills, according to a Lake in Hills Police Department press release. 

On that day, police received information that the store was selling Spice, a synthetic drug that became illegal in the state of Illinois in January 2012. During the course of the investigation, police ended up confisicating 63 packages of the suspected substance from Cigarettes Depot.

Spice is marketed as incense or potpourri but it is typically ingested by smoking. The effects of the drug is similar to marijuana, according to the police department press release. 

The Lake in the Hills Police Department has conducted checks for the illegal substances at local businesses in April 2011, December 2011 and January 2012.

The police department also has also within the community to educate the public about the dangers of the synthetic drugs, which they say is primarily used by teens and young adults.
