Lightning Strikes Two Homes in LITH

Two Lake in the Hills homes were struck by lightning during the weekend’s intense thunderstorms, according to fire department and police reports.

The first strike hit a home on the 200 block of Wedgewood Circle. The Huntley Fire Department received the call at 2:33 a.m., Saturday, according to Capt. John Winkelman.

“It struck the back peak of the house and worked its way into the siding and into the attic area,” Winkelman said. He said the fire was under control by 2:52 a.m.  However officers stayed on the scene until 6:45 a.m. to tarp the house and wait for contractors to arrive to board up the house.

The two occupants in the home were able to evacuate and no one was injured.

Winkelman said the damage to the home is estimated at between $15,000 and $20,000.

The second lightning strike occurred at 3 Castle Pines Court in the Boulder Ridge Country Club community. The two occupants evacuated the home safely. received a call that a burglar alarm went off at 8:36 a.m., Sunday.

“There was some minor smoldering in the center of the house. It looked like it came from the top of the attic area, above the garage door,” said Sgt Ted Ziarkowski of Lake in the Hills police department.

Capt. Winkelman said the Castle Pines property damage was estimated at $8,000 with contents damage about $1,000.
