Authorities Find Rumored Gun Threat at HHS Unfounded

Huntley High School principal says rumors not credible but the school will take precautionary measures anyway.

An investigation into rumors surrounding a gun threat at Huntley High School on Friday, Dec. 21 found they are not credible, but there will be an increased police presence at the school for the rest of the week as a precaution, school officials said Wednesday.

Principal Dave Johnson released a letter to parents Wednesday night explaining the rumors and the investigation. He wrote “there are non-credible rumors regarding a possible gun threat to Huntley High School on Friday of this week. In the aftermath of tragedies such as the one at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut last week, rumors and copycat threats tend to emerge.”

Twenty-six people, including 20 children, were shot and killed at Sandy Hook on Friday, Dec. 14 in one of the country’s worse mass killings.

Other districts in the area have had similar rumors of violence on Friday, he said.

Officials believe December 21 is a date being mentioned in various rumors due to the discussion in the media about the Mayan calendar ending on that date, Johnson wrote.

The Mayan calendar has been the focus of doomsday predictions because it ends on that date. The predictions, like the rumors at HHS, are unfounded.

Still, HHS and police are taking the rumors of violence seriously.

“While most often these rumors or threats do not pose any actual danger we do fully investigate and pursue these situations with our school resources officer,” Johnson said.

As a precautionary measure, the school will have increased police presence this week, he said.

“Our intent is not to heighten any anxiety. The opposite is true. I want to assure you that our normal school schedule will continue and we do not believe there is any danger,” Johnson said.

Friday is the last day of school before winter break.

Do the bullets in hunting rifles not penetrate the body?

In the 1700's people were afraid of the gov 't seizing their land so they had guns for protection, yes against the gov't What do most of us live on now, what about a 1/4 of an acre? Are we still afraid of the gov't having guns? What exactly are you afraid they will do with those guns? As for Criminals having guns, yes, bad people will find a way to get them just as illegal drugs can be accessed if wanted. But do the laws for guns need to be so lax? Why make it so accessible? I do not want to live in a country where people have to lock themselves in their own homes like prisoners and fear their neighbor because now we don't know who is concealed carrying. God will bless America as soon as we allow him back in. I truly believe it is evil that is making its presence and we need to bring back love, respect and kindness to one another. This country has so much yet they are lacking in morals and love and caring for one another.

If all the bad guys can get guns, then I would hope the regular people would be able to have one to defend themselves, also. There is NO need for anyone, except the military to have semi automatic weapons...if you need those for hunting, then u might need to rethink that sport for yourself. Seriously. We need to focus on keeping everyone safe, looking out for one another, reporting suspicious people/activity...become a society that actually cares about the well being of each other. We need to seriously look at family values, and families in general. Parents need to actually "parent" their children....love them, play games together, share experiences together...don't just birth kids and shove them into the population without social and life skills. Don't have kids and plant them in front of violent video games. Play sports with your kids, actually participate in activities with your kids. I was a teacher for 8 years....kids just want their parents' time and attention. I think if we had a major change in environmental surroundings and upbringing for these kiddos, these instances would be reduced...it's a sad state that we are in, and we will have to come together as a society and as parents to fix this mess...

Stricter gun laws sure but banning them will never happen. I was at GAT guns today getting some ammo and there was a line from the upstairs gun department that circled through the entire 2nd floor down the stairs went across the first floor and out into the parking lot. Looks like the gun stimulus plan is working just fine.
