Former Algonquin Man Arrested for Parents' 2006 Murder Near Crystal Lake

Michael Romano, 54, of Las Vegas, and formerly of Algonquin, has been charged with four counts of first degree murder.

A former Algonquin man was arrested in Las Vegas on Tuesday, and has been charged with the 2006 murder of his parents at their home in Lake Killarney. 

Michael Romano, 54, who was living in the 4200 block of Ridgeview Dr. in Las Vegas, was taken into custody by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Jan. 14, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. 

A Bill of Indictment and arrest warrant for Romano was recently obtained in connection with the death of his parents, Nicholas and Gloria Romano, who were found dead in their home at 6206 Kilkenny Drive in the unincorporated Crystal Lake area on Nov. 19, in 2006. 

The investigation into the couple's death had remained open and active during the past seven years, the Sheriff's Office said. The investigation was reviewed by members of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, who made the decision to present this case to the Grand Jury.

Members of the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division traveled to Las Vegas, NV where Romano was arrested and charged with four counts of first degree murder, the Sheriff's Office stated in a news release.

Romano's bond was set at $3 million. He is awaiting an extradition hearing in Las Vegas which has been scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16.

In the event that Romano challenges extradition, a Governor’s Warrant will be obtained. Otherwise, if Romano waives extradition, he will be transported to the McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility.

The Northwest Herald reports that Nick Romano, 71, and Gloria Romano, 65, were found with gunshot wounds to the back of the head. Michael Romano had told police he drove to his parents' house at 3 a.m. on Nov. 19, 2006, to check on them because they weren't answering their phones and found them dead.
