UPDATE: 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department has determined a 55 gallon drum filled with chemicals is safe in its current location until a remediation company can properly remove it.

Batt. Chief Robert Kohley said firefighters were called to John Crane, Inc., 29-31 Burdent Dr., Crystal Lake, at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. Workers at the company were concerned about an unexpected chemical reaction relating to the contents of the pressurized drum.

Kohley did not disclose the name of the chemical materials in the drum.

Hazardous material technicians from the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System were requested to evaluate whether the unexpected chemical reaction posed a danger to people or the property.

At 11 p.m., the MABAS team determined the drum was safe in its current location until it could be removed by a remediation company at a later time, Kohley stated in a news release.

No injuries were reported, but the area of Burdent Drive, Walkup Avenue and Second Street was filled with a multitude of fire trucks, medical emergency vehicles and mechanical trucks for nearly four hours.
