Barrington Hills Teen Pleads Guilty in Fatal DUI Case

A Barrington Hills teen entered guilty pleas Wednesday to aggravated DUI charges for causing a crash that killed a 61-year-old Elgin man and seriously injured his fiancé last year, according to media reports.

Karsten Eilersten, of the 900 block of Oakdene Road, could face up to 13 years in prison when sentenced on charges of aggravated DUI involving death and aggravated DUI involving great bodily harm, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Eilersten was a senior at Barrington High School when the crash occurred on March 3, 2013, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Eilersten was driving a Chevrolet Suburban north on Route 59 in Barrington Hills when he sideswiped a Toyota, injuring the 57-year-old driver, and then crashed head-on with a Dodge driven by Ronald Ziolo of Elgin, according to the Daily Herald.

Ziolo died, and the 44-year-old female passenger suffered a foot injury that despite several surgeries may never heal, the Daily Herald reports.

A sentencing hearing has been set for Aug. 9, according to the Chicago Tribune.
