Algonquin Police Issue 74 Citations During Holiday Enforcement

The intensified enforcement effort to combat late-night impaired driving and safety belt violations is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The end of a two-week campaign to curb late-night drunken-driving and safety belt violations resulted in 74 citations locally during the holiday season.

The enforcement period completed as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation's “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns ran from Dec. 19 to Jan. 1, said Sgt. Jeff Sutrick.

During the crackdown, Algonquin police arrested three people on DUI charges and two more on other alcohol-related charges, arrested one for driving on a revoked license arrest, and issued 35 speeding tickets, five seatbelt citations and 28 other moving violations.

The intensified enforcement effort to combat late-night impaired driving and safety belt violations underscores the disproportionate number of traffic deaths occurring during late-night hours, police said. The enforcement campaign is part of the Illinois Department of Transportation's Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program. The Algonquin Police Department received a grant from IDOT to increase late-night patrols.
