Does it take you more than 30 minutes to get to your job each day?

You are not alone.

Around 65 percent of Lake in the Hills residents spend more than 30 minutes commuting to work, with 43 percent of those commuters spending more than 45 minutes traveling to their jobs, according to statistics published in the Business Journals from an On Numbers study.

The On Numbers study contained statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau 2009 American Community Survey.

Lake in the Hills ranked among the worst for commute times for communities with a population between 10,000 and 50,000. The village ranked 2,980 among the 3,012 communities across the nation surveyed and third to last among Illinois communities.

The community with the best commute times was Altkus, Okla., with 80.5 percent of its residents facing less than a 15 minute commute each day, according to the Business Journals article.

In Illinois, residents living in Macomb, located southwest of Peoria, have the best commute times with 78.91 percent of its residents spending less than 14 minutes traveling to work.

  • 22.24 percent have a commute time of 30 to 44 minutes
  • 42.69 percent have a commute time of 45 minutes or more, while the national average for the same commute time is 15.5 percent

Nearby suburbs did not fare much better for commute times.

  • Algonquin had a rank of 2,887 . If you were to ask IDOT about demographics they claim RTE 31 is only 15000 cars a day. Maybe they are basing there grids on wrong information? I have a letter from the fine folks at IDOT a few months ago stating that all the new counts are wrong in the 40,000 range and it is only 15000 cars a day..... This could be a problem since the projections are so far off.

The biggest problem for commuters is there are so few point to get across the river and the grid lock of cars on 62, 72 is terrible, thus, one has to go around down to 90 or up north to make headway. Also, the traffic control patterns related gas stations and stores clog intersections worse then most areas of the western and northwestern suburbs.

50 minutes each way to and from work. NW side of Chicago. 3rd shift so this is very light traffic.

so glad to live on the east side of town (and the river)

Why is 31, 176, 72 and 62 at times 1 lane??? Forget crossing 31 on 62. What a joke to let that go for so long, not to mention the beautiful abandoned building on the way. Poor community development planning, from greed. Let's cram in as many houses we can with no jobs around and not plan for the traffic to get to the jobs far away and tax the hell out of them and misuse the money so it's not purposed correctly.

I am not surprised to hear we have commuter issues, I am surprised that there are 32 communities with bigger issues... and it gets worse, if you travel on 62, read this October 20th Patch article and just imagine even MORE traffic across the bridge. http://lakeinthehills.patch.com/articles/apartment-developer-eyes-property-adjacent-to-fire-department-headquarters

I'm in NW LITH and it can take me over 2 hours to go to office in Lincolnshire - a mere 30 miles straight east! Two major bottlenecks - across the river and through Long Grove - account for about 75% of that travel time during regular rush. I opted for second shift to avoid that traffic, although it still takes more than an hour at midday to go to the office.
