William E. Tegtmeier, 89, of Crystal Lake

William Edward Tegtmeier, 89, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Pepper Family Hospice Home in Barrington, surrounded by his family.

He was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Crystal Lake to Charles and Bertha Tegtmeier.

On Aug. 10, 1946, he married Shirley Ann Pletz in McHenry. 

Bill proudly served his country as a sergeant in the First Division Marine Corps, receiving a Purple Heart for his service in the South Pacific.

He belonged to the Operating Engineers Local 150 Union and worked for Peter Baker & Sons for 30 years.

Bill will be remembered for his friendly smile and warm personality.

Using his carpentry and mechanic skills, he spent much of his spare time making improvements to the home he lived in for 58 years. He was always helping out his neighbors, painting their homes, building garages, shoveling snow and maintaining the driveways.

He is survived by four children, Ginger Sebastian, William (Cindy) Tegtmeier, Paula (Bruce Cavoti) Tegtmeier, Marcy Ann Tegtmeier; grandchildren, John William (Heather) Veugeler, Megan Ann Veugeler, Kim Tegtmeier, Gabe Romero, Caleb, Cora and Anna Schwan; great-grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Sierra and Summer Siebert, Lauren and Michael Veugeler, Austin Romero. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Shirley, daughter Georgia Lee, his parents, his sister Alice Ragona and brother Fred Tegtmeier. 

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Querhammer and Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Route 176, Crystal Lake.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, Jan 16, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Crystal Lake.
