Randall W. Voelker, 85, of Lake in the Hills, passed away July 16, 2012 in Crystal Lake. 

He was born on December 7, 1926 in Chicago, IL to Edgar and Ethel (Tyson) Voelker. On April 9, 1949, he married Dorothy Vonderlack in Chicago. 

He was a member of the United States Air Force, and worked as a carpenter and later as an entrepreneur making custom frames. He was a rail fan who enjoyed steam engines; in particular, capturing them on audio and video and adding to extensive collection of tapes.

He spent time at the Illinois Railway Museum and enjoyed playing his trumpet. He loved nature and animals. He had a lifelong love of learning that he nurtured through reading. He formed many friendships through his gentle nature and warm demeanor. 

He is survived by his sons Ronald (Terry) and Kendall; his grandchildren, Jessica (Joe) Kucher and Nick (Nicole) Voelker; his great-grandchildren, Joseph, Kylie, William, Olivia, Andrew, Cecilia, Robert; his niece and nephews, Jeannie Wagner, Don, and Doug Crawford; and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and his sister, Natalie (Frank) Crawford. 

A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. A memorial service will be held at 7 pm.
