What is Social Anxiety Phobia?

For one, it is a very real thing. It’s not an excuse or something made up. Social anxiety disorder is also called social phobia. The fear can be debilitating, preventing one from doing everyday things such as going to work, running errands, or meeting with friends. Those with social phobia often know that they shouldn’t be so afraid, but they can’t control their fear. People with social phobia are afraid of doing common things in front of other people. For example, signing a check in front of a cashier at the grocery store, or they might be afraid to eat or drink in front of other people, or use a public restroom” Approximately 15 million suffer from Social Anxiety, with a majority of them being women. People average about 10 years of experiencing social Anxiety before seeking help. Social Anxiety Phobia Symptoms: Cause significant physical problems because it affects your emotions and behavior on a regular basis. • Intense fear of interacting with strangers • Fear of situations in which you may be judged • Worrying about embarrassing or humiliating yourself • Fear that others will notice that you look anxious • Have a hard time making friends and keeping friends • Anxiety that disrupts your daily routine, work, school or other activities • Avoiding doing things or speaking to people out of fear of embarrassment • Avoiding situations where you might be the center of attention • Difficulty making eye contact • Difficulty talking • Using a public restroom or telephone • Writing in front of others • Entering a room in which people are already seated • Ordering food in a restaurant Physical social anxiety disorder symptoms include: • Blushing / sweating /cold, clammy hands • Trembling or shaking • Fast heartbeat • Shaky voice • Upset stomach / Nausea /Diarrhea • Muscle tension • Confusion Experiences that one faces daily that are difficult to tolerate when you have Social Anxiety Disorder can be: • Using a public restroom or telephone • Returning items to a store • Interacting with strangers • Writing in front of others • Making eye contact • Entering a room in which people are already seated • Ordering food in a restaurant • Being introduced to strangers Initiating conversations Treatment Social phobia is generally treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Talk with your physician; bring someone you trust with you if it will help. He will need to rule out any other physical problems. A referral to a mental Health Doctor who treats these disorders on a regular basis is who you will want to schedule a visit with soon. They are specialists. • Psychological Counseling: improves symptoms in most people with social anxiety disorder. In therapy, you learn how to recognize and change negative thoughts about yourself. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most common type of counseling for anxiety. • They may also recommend and assist you in developing relaxation or stress management techniques. There are also medication options. Talk with your doctor about it. I’ll bet you know someone who suffers with these symptoms. It’s exhausting having to deal and resist fear all day long.
