Four gold coins valued at $5,200 total were anonymously donated in a Salvation Army red kettle in Lake Zurich on Dec. 4.

Four gold coins worth $1,300 each were dropped into a Salvation Army red kettle on Dec. 4 outside the Lake Zurich Wal-Mart with an additional gold coin dropped in the same kettle on Dec. 5, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It is tradition for gold coins to be left in Salvation Army kettles during the holiday season, which started in McHenry County 25 years ago. These were the first gold coins ever left in Lake Zurich, according to the article.

Anonymous donors also left gold coins, worth $497 each, in kettles in Grayslake, Waukegan and Round Lake, according to the Chicago Tribune.
