Algonquin Collects e-Waste at Recycling Event

Residents can drop off old electronics on May 18.

Algonquin residents got rid of 34 tons of electronics at last year’s e-Waste Recycling Event. What will be the magic number this year?

The recycling event is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the Algonquin Public Works Facility, 110 Meyer Drive. This event is for Algonquin residents only. Proof of residency will be required at the time of drop-off.

Saturday’s e-Waste Recycling rounds out a month of clean-up and environmental events held throughout the village including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Prescription Take Back Day where old or unused medications were turned into local police.

Algonquin police collected 40 pounds of medications on April 27, Police Chief Russell Laine said.

Nationally, the DEA reported 371 tons of medications were turned in, up by 50 percent over the previous event.

“It was a little less than we collected in the past, but we think it is a good initiative and a good service,” Laine said.
