Where Were You When 9/11 Happened?

Share your memory with the rest of us.

There are many people that can remember where they were or what they were doing when they found out that Kennedy had been shot.

From a more recent historical occurence, I am curious to see how many people can remember what they were doing on 9/11, which is now in its 10th anniversary.

I was a sophomore in high school and was sitting in my first period geometry class. With just a minute to go before the end of class, our high school's principal announced over the loud speaker that teachers should turn on the TVs. Before our teacher could get the TV on, class was over and I was walking into to my second period Spanish classroom when I saw on the TV an airplane fly into the second Twin Tower. We spent the rest of the school day watching CNN and Tom Brokaw's coverage of that tragic day.

Here's what two Patch readers were doing:

I was in my sophomore year of college and I had just laid down after my first morning class when I got a phone call from my friend in the next dorm building over. She was frantic and telling me to turn on the t.v. we are being attacked. I quickly turned on the t.v. and I could not stop watching it. I called my mom right away and was terrified as to what was going on. All I could remember was wanting to go home but scared to leave the campus. (I was an hour and a half away) The rest of our classes were cancelled and the college had t.v.s on with the footage and news all day. I was on the phone with my mom a lot that day and stayed close to friends. there was a prayer vigil that night that we all went to as well. We were all so shocked and scared.

My older daughter and my son used to be in radio commercials. Maggi auditioned to be a jingle singer for a 'national company' (we didn't know the company) in the beginning of September, 2001.  On September 10, I got a phone call from the studio manager at Chicago Recording Company that she got the part, and it was for Boeing.

HOLY CATS, we thought. Maggi has it made!!

So our plan for the next day was that she would skip school and we'd go downtown Chicago for the recording, and to meet the team from Boeing. We were buying a bagel for breakfast on September 11 before our drive down. People in line were talking about the first tower that had been destroyed. As we were getting in the car, the studio manager called and said "Don't come downtown. We don't know what's happening and we're cancelling everything for today, then we're going home."

Boeing ended up changing their advertising campaign and didn't need little girls.
