UPDATE: Cooling Center in LITH Open 24 Hours

ComEd is calling Monday's storm-sparked outage one of the worst in its history and is reporting it could take days to restore power to all its customers.

, 600 Harvest Gate, opened its doors as a cooling center Monday. 

The cooling center will be open 24 hours, according to a Lake in the Hills press release, that said it was opened in response to power outages that left many in the dark and without air conditioning Monday after a powerful, early morning thunderstorm ripped through the area.

as one of the worst in its history, knocking out power to 278,000 customers in the northern region, which includes Lake in the Hills. ComEd is reporting it could be days before electricity is restored.

“It’s one of the worst storms we've seen in the last 10 years,” a ComEd representative said. 

The power outages in the village were "sporadic" and located mainly east of Randall Road, according to the news release.

Storm-Related Calls

The Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Department and Lake in the Hills Police Department responded to dozens of storm-related calls Monday.

The Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Department responded to 34 weather-related calls, said Battalion Chief Mike Kern. No serious injuries were reported throughout the course of the storm, area police and fire officials reported.

“We had quite a few calls about downed wires and trees … most of the debris has been cleared, so roads are all open,” Vollmer said. “The major concern now for most people is the power.”

ComEd Customers Remain Without Power

At the height of Monday’s problems, 765,000 ComEd customers were left in the dark throughout the Chicago area.

As of 2 p.m., ComEd had restored power to 20,000 customers in the northern region.

A total of 578,000 are still without power across the entire Chicago area.
