General Weather Discussion for the Week Ahead

The same old frontal boundary that has been in place over the past few months will remain south of our region today with the best chance of t-storms over central and eastern Illinois. After all the record rain as of late, we could certainly use a break and it looks like we will get a well deserved holiday from all the active weather with a nice weekend in store for the entire area.

Late in the weekend, the frontal boundary which will make it all the way into the Ohio Valley region will lift back north as a warm front with possibly a few brief showers/t-storms for a time Monday morning. The best chance appears to be to our north with storms possibly lingering into Wisconsin and Michigan during the afternoon.

An active cluster or two of t-storms may again impact parts of northern and northeast Illinois around August 3 or August 4 with the potential of more heavy rain and possible severe weather. These mesoscale convective complexes like to form at night and take advantage of warm, moist air coming up from the south due to a low level jet-stream. Since the frontal boundary is set up across the Upper Midwest, the upper-level winds are often parallel to the front and this often leads to heavy rain over a narrow corridor over several hours. This is one reason why all the record rain has been occurring as t-storms repeat over the same areas time and time again.

Looks like a break by the end of next week with more t-storms possible toward next weekend as the active pattern reestablishes itself over the Upper Midwest. Rain may again become heavy at times in parts of the area.

Temperatures will average several degrees above normal through the period with highs in the mid to upper 80s and daily lows in the lower 70s. It will also feel rather humid with dewpoints in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
