Small Chemical Spill at Jacobs Sends 2 to Hospital

Ten classrooms with about 300 students were moved to a different portion of the high school, away from the spill, according to the Northwest Herald.

Two staff members at Jacobs High School in Algonquin requested medical attention this morning after a teacher spilled formaldehyde in a hallway, according to a Northwest Herald.

Following the small chemical spill, 10 classrooms of around 300 students were moved to a different part of the school, according to the article. District 300 spokeswoman Allison Strupeck told the NW Herald that formaldehyde is not hazardous or dangerous but very odorous.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived to the scene at 8:37 a.m. and were directed to the area where the spill occurred and, subsequently, was cleaned up by school staff.

Between 500 ml and 800 ml of formaldehyde was spilled.  Due to the isolated area the spill occurred in and minimal amount spilled there was no need to evacuate the building.  School operations and students were not affected.
