Construction Zone: Slow Down On Rakow Road

The new speed limit will be 35 mph, and the minimum fine for violation of the construction speed limit will be $375.

A new construction speed limit of 35 mph will go into effect Friday for the portion of Rakow Road between Ackman Road in Lake in the Hills and Route 31 in Crystal Lake.

This press release was issued this past week on the Rakow Road Construction website regarding the speed limit change:

A new construction speed limit zone for Rakow/Randall Road will go into effect beginning on July 8, 2011. The new speed limit will be 35 miles per hour and construction speed limit signs will be posted to mark the zone, which will run from Rakow Road/Randall Road between Ackman Road and IL 31. The minimum fine for violation of the construction speed limit will be $375. It is expected the speed zone will remain in effect until project completion scheduled for the fall of 2012.

Speeding, impatience and driver inattention are the leading factors in work-zone crashes. Drivers should slow down and stay alert in work zones for their own safety as well as (the safety of) construction workers. Road construction zones require greater driver caution due to features such as narrow lanes, lane shifts, reduced shoulder width, obstructions and drop-offs. More than 90 percent of Illinois’ traffic related work-zone fatalities are motorists.

This is the first year of the two-year program to widen Rakow/Randall Road between Ackman Road and Illinois Route 31. The project is scheduled to be substantially complete in the fall of 2012, and will widen and reconstruct Rakow/Randall Road from two lanes to six lanes between Ackman and Pyott Road, and from two lanes to four lanes between Pyott Road and IL 31. The project also will include the construction of dual left-turn lanes at key intersections.
