Murder Charges Filed in Fatal Crash

The accident on Aug. 5 killed 38-year-old Sonia Hume of Woodstock.

A 22-year-old Round Lake Beach man who McHenry County Sheriff's Department officials say caused a crash that killed an area woman has been charged with first-degree murder and reckless homicide. 

Luis E. Ramirez remains in custody at the McHenry County Correctional Facility on a $1 million bond. 

The crash occurred at 7:17 a.m. Aug. 5 on Tryon Grove Road near Barnard Mill Road in Hebron Township, according to the sheriff's department press release.

Ramirez is accused of attempting to pass two vehicles while driving east on Tryon Grove Road before he collided head-on with a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Sonia Hume, 38, of Woodstock.

Hume died at the scene. Ramirez was taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry where he received medical treatment for a week, according to the press release.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Department during the course of its investigation "determined the crash was not an accident, it was an intentional act committed by Luis E. Ramirez." Hume and Ramirez did not know each other, according to the release.

Ramirez is next expected to appear for a hearing in McHenry County Court at 9 a.m. Aug. 19.
