McHenry County DOT: Avoid Travel on Rakow Road

The major thoroughfare for Lake in the Hills residents will be down to one lane next week and temporary traffic signals have been activated at Ackman and Rakow roads and McHenry and Rakow roads.

Westbound traffic on James R. Rakow Road slowed to a crawl Thursday afternoon as work crews activated temporary traffic signals at two major intersections along the heavily-traveled thoroughfare.

“We have to tear everything out -- including the traffic signals -- so we can make the Rakow Road wider,” said Terry Heffron, McHenry County Division of Transportation spokesman. “We have to string temporary traffic signals to do the job during construction.”

Throughout next week, traffic will be down to one lane for intermittent periods, and McHenry County DOT officials are warning motorists to avoid Rakow Road during construction.

The 3-mile stretch of Rakow between Ackman and Illinois Highway 31 is one of the most heavily traveled roads in McHenry County.

Currently, the intersections of Ackman and Rakow roads and McHenry and Rakow roads have temporary signals up. By next week, all intersections on Rakow Road -- except for the intersection of Rakow Road and Highway 31-- will have temporary signals.

The $27 million Rakow Road construction project will be completed in the fall of 2012, officials say.

The two-year construction project includes straightening and widening Rakow to six lanes between Ackman Road and Pyott Road; and four lanes between Pyott Road and Highway 31. All intersections on Rakow Road will also be widened, officials said.
