Marlowe Students Earn Top Places in 'Americanism' Essay Contest

Justyna Czeczot of Huntley and Brittany O'Connor and Laura Gathman, both of Lake in the Hills, were recognized for their "Celebrating America and Our Heritage" essays.

Whiz Kids’ Grade:  8th Grade

Whiz Kids’ Accomplishment: The students won first, second and third place in the Huntley American Legion #673's annual “Americanism” essay contest.

Nine students from Marlowe Middle School entered the American Legion's essay contest, which is open to all seventh and eighth grade students residing within the legion's district, said John Brummer, a counselor at Marlowe Middle School.

This year's theme was "Celebrating America and Our Heritage." Justyna’s essay won first place; Brittany’s piece won second; and Laura’s entry placed third.

As the winner, Justyna’s submission will advance to the auxiliary district level, where the essay will be judged among all other auxiliary level first-place winners. The winning district level essay will compete for a $200 prize at the division/state level.
