Indian Trail Beach To Open For Summer Season

The official start of the Lake in the Hills beach season will kick off with a treasure hunt at Indian Trail Beach on Saturday.

It's time to break out the beach towels and bathing suits.

, 228 Indian Trail, officially will open for the season at 10 a.m. Saturday.

To celebrate the first day of beach bathing and swimming, the Lake in the Hills Parks Department is hosting a free Pirate Treasure Hunt at 1 p.m. for children ages 1 to 12 years. The annual hunt is always popular with area kids, said Andrew Gemmell, LITH superintendent of recreation.

“The beach opening day all depends upon the weather,” Gemmell said. “Last year, it was a little cold and rainy, but people showed up for the treasure hunt anyway.”

The opening comes after the McHenry County Department of Health deemed the beach safe to swim after closing it last week when high levels of E. coli were found in the water.

Over 7,000 Visited LITH Beaches Last Summer

Last year, about 7,300 people visited Lake in the Hills’ two beaches during the summer season, Gemmell said. is also in LITH.

A popular feature at Indian Trail is the sand volleyball area. Paddleboats and kayaks are available to rent from noon to 5 p.m. Cost is $6 per half hour, and $11 for one hour.

Indian Trail Beach, open from sunrise to sunset, is guarded from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, if the air or water temperature is 65 degrees or colder, no lifeguard staff will be on duty.

Butch Hagele Beach, 71 Hilltop Drive, is scheduled to open June 13. The beach will be open to the public from sunrise to sunset, but manned by lifeguards only from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Daily beach admission is $2 for residents and $5 for nonresidents. Children younger than 5 years old, accompanied by a paying adult, get in free. Admission can be paid at Indian Trail Beach or at the .

Village lake-use beach passes are available to residents for $40; senior citizens for $30; and nonresidents for $60. Passes are sold at , 600 Harvest Gate. Those who buy beach passes are permitted to have as many as six people from their household listed on their beach tag.
